Debussy, Claude (1862-1918)

Program Note:

Father of the Impressionist movement in music and one of the pioneers of the modern harmonic language, Claude Debussy composed music for orchestra, piano, chamber ensembles and voice. His output reflects a strong and innovative approach to tonal relationships, chordal treatment and explorations of instrumental colors.
Petite Suite consists of four movements and was first performed in 1889. The first two movements (En bateau; sailing and Cortège; retinue) were inspired by poems of Paul Verlaine’s Fêtes galantes. The third and fourth movements are not tied to any specific writings, but continue to carry out the charming qualities that Debussy initialized.
