Program Note:

While few details about his life are known, Christian Ritter (ca. 1650-1725) was probably a pupil of the great Dresden theorist and composer Christoph Bernhard. Many years later, Ritter returned to serve as assistant Kapellmeister under his former teacher. But in the intervening years, Ritter had worked as Kammerorganist (chamber organist) in Halle and journeyed on two separate occasions to Sweden. It is also possible he spent time in the musically sophisticated atmosphere of Hamburg. Few of his works remain today; what survives makes us only more aware of how much we have lost from this forgotten genius.
