Frühlingsglaube

Schubert, Franz (1797-1828)

Program Note:

The structure of “Frühlingsglaube” (Faith in Spring) represents the utmost in simplicity: two repeated stanzas plus piano prelude and postlude. Tonally speaking, too, Schubert has wandered into a sunny field of diatonicism and lyricism evoking the poem’s overall message: spring is a restorative, all things must change, even pain has its end. The single tonal contrast alludes to the speaker’s past “torments” over diminished 7th chords. In the end, optimism and reverence of nature rule the day.
